World Cock 2006

Slow updates means lots of what I would like to write gets lost. No big deal, it would probably be a lot of bullshit anyway !
Sunday night (3 AM in Japan) I saw the game Italy vs France. The first half was quite good, Italy dominated and I was somewhat proud of the team.
From the send half and on, Italy didn’t appear to be doing much. The team went on and managed to win, quite frankly, out of sheer luck.

By now everyone in Italy is going crazy. Some of my friends that went to watch the game in Roppongi (the Tokyo area dedicated to foreigners) apparently had great fun celebrating the victory.

Personally I left the pub where I was watching the game once it came to penalties. Really too much struggle to see anyone lose at penalties, plus I already considered France stronger, and there was no need to see the actual result dictated by factors which don’t reflect the main body of the game.

So Italy won.. and I think it’s not such a good thing. National team has a wide appeal. Can make cheer people like me, those that don’t care to daily follow soccer news. However it gives a lot of power to those that are crazy about the sport. Gives power to the mass, people that would rater sit on a couch and zip from a useless soccer program to the next.
In the recent years Italian TV only got worse: more commercials, more soccer debates, every single day day: soccer, soccer, soccer.
Italians are easily satisfied by a simple life with a steady job and lots of soccer bullshit to keep them interested in useless stuff, rather than getting busy on developing a brain.

Sure, dumb people are everywhere. That’s why every country has a national sport.. to keep people happy while others get rich and powerful.

I’m sure the current Italian government is so glad to have a popoulation feeling like they are worth something, while in fact their are just puppets.

Congratulations on the World Cup !!! We won.. yeahhhh !!!

Italy had a good 1st half.
But then looked very tired in the 2nd half and the extra time, maybe because of the long game vs Germany?

Too bad that the world cup had to be decided on penalties where it is just a matter of luck.

However lets not forget that the 1st French penalty was also bullshit and Italy’s goal was real.

Also Italy had a goal dissallowed because of an offsight which was a really close call. Some referees would not have
called that offsight. It was a matter of a few centimeters.

So overall I think that Italy did enough to deserve a win even though France was a better team in the 2nd half and overtime.

I’m sure there is a lot of excitement in Rome right now. I was there in 82 last time Italy won.. everyone was partying !
This year when I went back, a friend of mine was vehemently cursing against Italy.. then, the other day, my mother went out in the streets to celebrate and she met met him.. 8)

I agree with your analysis. I’m just not so sure they were that tired from a game happened days before.
I think France, like some say, has more physical strength. During the late part of the game, they constantly outperformed the Italian players when it came to run to the ball.
In the end, we won by the rules, and so be it, but it was a close call.. and we could as well have lost, all it took was a slight mistake from a France player.

I don’t think that penalties are just a matter of luck. Every sport has a rule to break a tie, in the end.
If you kick a good penalty it is almost impossible for a keeper to save it.
So the penalties are influenced more by ability than by luck.
Even if France gained the game control in the midfield, they were unable to break italian strong defense.
If we count the really dangerous chanches we have a goal, we hit the bar and we have a goal canceled for
a matter of centimeters; they have a very doubtful penalty, and 2 saves from our goalkeeper (only the head shot
by Zidane was really dangerous). In the end a tie was a right result. And like Pelé says
“A shot that hits the post/bar is a missed one”

I still think penalties are an unfair way to break a tie. Like you say it has been shown that if a player kicks the ball
exactly into a corner the goalkeeper has no time to reach it, even if he dives in the right direction. And very good players
sometimes miss penalties (e.g. Beckham, Baggio), so in my opinion penalties are more luck than ability.
