Number one.. Attack !!!

AttackNo1-3.jpgIn my days in school I used to watch a lot of Japanese cartoons. I always envied how in those cartoons kids had their sports uniforms, how serious they were about volleyball, basketball, swimming.. what ? A school with a swimming pool ?!!
One of the most popoular anime was Attack No.1 . The story about Kozue Ayuhara (Mimi Ayuhara for the Italian version) and her feats with her school’s volleyball team.
In the anime, volleyball was quite a serious thing. Her coach was very demanding. She trained very seriously, every day. Training was excruciating, physically very painful and sometimes rather unorthodox (hitting the ball with chains around the wrists !!).
Everything was clearly distorted, especially physics had little meaning, as balls would disappear from sight, follow strange paths and deform like melting cheese.

I envied Japanese students because I could see that they actually had some system in place to practice sports at a competitive level. Sure, we all had good laughs at those exaggerations, but I could tell what was true and what was pure fantasy… or could I ?

Recently I learned more about sports in Japanese schools thanks some girl I know that used to be pretty involved in her basketball club.
Along with normal studies, everyone can join a sports club where more or less traditional sports can be practiced.
My source tells me that her coach was very strict indeed, demanding training 3 times per day, including one hour during lunch break. Training had to be done every day. No school on Saturday or Sunday, but clubs are open on weekends, so one basically ends up going on Saturdays and Sundays as well.
She would run and practice so much that her toe nails would go black and sometimes tear off. Sport shoes gave her flat feet and a bone deformation below the knee that apparent is typical of professional soccer players. Last but not least, her coach forbid any girl of the club from shortening the school uniform’s skirt (a common practice here in Japan 8)
I heard stories of strong competition, drama of physical injuries that prevented taking championships.

I think back at those anime and they don’t seem so off anymore !

…yeah.. in the anime only 8(

  3. rince says:

hhhmmm then why are the japanese not really very famous in sport? judging by how they train they should be 1st in everything!!!!

Why are the Americans so fat then ? Judging from how they get most golds in the Olympics, they should be the most fit ;)

First of all not all Japanese train that well, otherwise there would be no shortening of skirts in uniforms 8)

I see that most Japanese end their studies with high-school or a vocational school, which is more or less at the American college level, less the sports (unless I’m mistaken !).
Getting into the university isn’t easy at all.. culturally Japanese just want to get working with a safe job rather than trying to become some sports superstar and eventually go abroad (most Japanese men really don’t travel that much !).

Nonetheless Japan is certainly pretty strong with its own sports. It exports Baseball players, something which would never happen in Italy simply for the fact that Baseball involves a minimum of protective uniform, a bat and a proper field.. which is way over the capabilities of the Italian school system.

(wow, no spelling errors ! It’s like code that compiles at the first try !)

ho ho ho.. what do I see ? Someone is being censored at last !

Welcome to MY web site. Please stop posting bullshit !

    Mr Kaz,

I got the idea from your post that sports training in japan is somehow taken very seriously starting from the school level.

Training on weekends, 3 times a day at, getting injured, losing championships etc, etc…

And americans are fat because of all the good italian restaurants here!

    > Mr.Rince
At the school level not from the school level. I know it’s taken seriously until high-school, but I don’t know what happens after. I suppose becoming a pro requires a different level of commitment.

As for the Italian restaurants, those in the Los Angeles area tend to suck actually.
Also if it were for Italian food, then Italians would be fatter than Americans ;)

Obesity seems to be on the raise everywhere, but Japanese are notoriously thin.
It’s probably not so much because of sports in schools. But if it is, then I guess there is much more advantage in keeping most people in shape than in building a few super-athletes while keeping the rest of the popoulation growing fat !

  9. rince says:

Well we have an italian restaurant here called ‘Il Davide’

    http://www.ildavide.net/MAIN.html

So I dont know if you want to criticize it? =)

I dont see what you can do to keep people in shape. In the end it is up to the individual to control their lifestyles. You could maybe prescribe some excercises while people are at work or at school, but once they go home and you are no longer paying for their time so there is not much you can do!

  10. Davide Pasca says:

I remember you took me there once !
Italian restaurants in North California seems to be better than those in the south, probably because there is an actual Italian community in San Francisco.

As for the effect of schools on lifestyle.. I think that it matters a lot.
Japanese schools are more organized and have more to offer respect to Italian schools, but even Italian schools (up to high-school) have a minimum of structure that can help a lot to stay fit. Doing some exercize 3-4 hours every week is definitely better than nothing.

    Un abbraccio e buon anno.

    - Ivano

Happy New Year to you too !!

    > Ivano
    Wow.. grazie del messaggio !
Cosa fai a Dublino ?

Comunque.. Buon Anno anche a te !
    A presto !
    bauuuuuuuuu
